Juan Antonio Barrero (1980, Sevilla )

“How much time does it take to dismantle a dictator's sleeping room forever?"

Many years ago, a businessman dragged Franco's yacht 300km inland, to place it on the top of a hill and convert it into a luxurious hotel. The great Atapuerca cave, where the rests of the most ancient hominid in Europe were discovered, can be seen from the dictator's old cabin .

" The memories of a franquist and poor Spain, and of a rough life, hard and grey as cement"

This short film is born from the need to get to know other neighbourhoods that were built during the sixties, in the times of the dictatorship. This is the case of Bellvitge, the place where I was born. A trip to different dormitory cities in Spain.

“A personal journey throughout lived and forgotten memories, in the search for a portrait of the dictator"

Who's Franco? Franco is a stranger... a face... a shadow... an image that I try to grasp, but it keeps avoiding me, hidden among my most personal memories. The search for these spaces is a gaze towards his shadow.

“The shadow takes form. As coming out from the dust, the ghost appears. It starts to chase me, I dream of him; he shakes me and touches me. Now, after all these years, he wasn't there when I was born!

Return to the coiled up root. Physical and human landscape from my childhood and adolescence. A research that affects everyday life. A journey which pursues the past from today (sometimes forgotten, other times unknown or silenced). Questions. Answers?

Sandra Ruesga (1975, Madrid)
“In the Valle de los Caídos (Valley of the Fallen) I discovered that I inherited a falsified history imposed by silences”

The first time that I became really conscious about who had been Franco I was 23 years old. I was in the Valle de los Caídos (Valley of the Fallen), a place where I had been many times before, without ever asking myself anything at all. Thirty years after the dictator's death, his grave still remains, above all, a touristic site.

Elia Urquiza (1979, Pamplona)
“It would be more dramatic to be a hero's granddaughter or even the villain's, but I descend from the secondary characters”

They were neither franquists, nor anti-franquists. Their relation with Franco is not traumatic, because Franco, simply does not exist. She slept for forty years in a deck chair, like the majority. My grandmother, the widow of a franquist soldier. Always talking from a distance, as if from a far away telephone.
